Artist Ralph McQuarrie has passed away at the age of 82. One of the primary visual forces behind the original Star Wars trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, McQuarrie created the original designs for such iconic characters as Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO. Before partnering with George Lucas, McQuarrie had worked illustrating movie posters and creating artwork for CBS News. He collaborated with Steven Spielberg several times, including on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and eventually won an Academy Award for his work on Cocoon. Contributing illustrations and conceptual drawings to video games, books, advertising campaigns, and numerous other projects over the years, it's no stretch to say that McQuarrie influenced science-fiction sensibilities for an entire generation. The Force Is Strong With Me!

This past weekend, the wife and I went to see the new Ghost Rider movie. Here's my review: it's not a great movie, but I thought it was kinda fun. Great review, right? Anyhoo, in the theater lobby was a huge display for Star Wars: TPM 3D with one of those standee things that you can put your face in. Of course I had to do it. I handed my embarrassed wife my phone and asked her to take a picture. I think it was meant for children, because I had to stoop down to put my face in it and you can see most of my body sticking out. Oh well, it was still awesome!

Davy Jones, R.I.P.

This makes me very sad. He was way too young. My brother and I used to listen to the Monkees all the time when we were young. R.I.P. Davy!

Davy Jones, the mop-topped leader of 1960s pop band The Monkees, died Wednesday of a massive heart attack. Jones was 66.

His publicist, Helen Kensick, said the singer died in Indiantown, Fla., where he lived.

With an infectious smile and easy humor, the diminutive Briton played the Paul McCartney role in the Beatles-inspired quartet, which also included Peter Tosh, Micky Dolenz and Mike Nesmith.

Jones sang lead on some of the group's biggest hits, including Last Train to Clarksville and I'm a Believer.

Jones, who like his bandmates had continued to perform, had dates scheduled for March.

Formed in 1966 by Hollywood producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, The Monkess quickly stormed radio and TV airwaves with a string of chart-topping songs that went on to sell an estimated 65 million copies worldwide.

"There were certain indelible images we had of The Monkees, and that was Mike's cap, Micky's goofy looks and Davy's cuteness," says Phil Gallo, senior correspondent at Billboard. "Of all of them, Davy's character was the softest. He was the nice guy, the crowd pleaser."

Gallo recalls being a kid in the 1960s, "collecting Batman cards, then graduating to Monkees cards, way before I got into baseball cards. They were the very first boy band, when you think about it."

Jones was born Dec. 30, 1945, in Manchester, England. His long hair and British accent helped him achieve heartthrob status in the United States.

According to The Monkees website, Monkees.com, he left the band in late 1970. In the summer of 1971, he recorded a solo hit Rainy Jane and made a series of appearances on American variety and television shows, including Love American Style and The Brady Bunch.

By the mid-1980s, Jones teamed up Tork, Dolenz and promoter David Fishof for a reunion tour. Their popularity prompted MTV to re-air The Monkees series, introducing the group to a new audience.

In 1989, the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the late 1990s, the group filmed a special called Hey, Hey, It's the Monkees.

Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters from previous marriages.

CFO Anthony Balasco states, "I never understood why 8 inch KISS action figures were not produced back in the 1970's when The Mego Toy Company had already released the 12 inch versions. Our first release will have the retro look from the 1970's, but future releases will cover all time periods in KISS's 40 year musical career from 1972 to 2012". Look for special exclusives and limited edition releases. Collectors will be able to find these at toy stores, comic shops, music stores and on-line retailers starting in March 2012.

Robert Hegyes, R.I.P.

Robert “Bobby” Hegyes, best known for playing Juan Epstein on “Welcome Back Kotter,” died in his Metuchen, N.J. home today.

He was 60.

Hegyes’ brother told New Jersey’s Star-Ledger that Hegyes, who also starred on “Cagney and Lacey,” had suffered a heart attack a few years ago and was in poor health.

Police responded to a call for assistance at his home this morning.

They found Hegyes suffering from chest pains; he was taken to a hospital in Edison, N. J., but by the time he reached the emergency room, he went into full cardiac arrest and died, a hospital spokesman told the paper.

Hegyes wrote in a note on his website that he modeled the character of the scheming half-Jewish, half-Puerto Rican Epstein on Chico Marx, noting that all the Marx Brothers were both “intellectuals” and “juvenile delinquents,” adding, “I could definitely relate.”

He continued to act after that show and “Cagney and Lacey,” appearing on “NewsRadio,” “Diagnosis Murder” and “The Drew Carey Show.”

He also appeared in the movie Bob Roberts opposite Tim Robbins, taught acting and wrote screenplays. He, along with almost all the original cast members of Welcome Back Kotter, reunited last year at the TV Land Awards to mark the show’s 35th anniversary.

Marvel: Dangerous Divas Trading Cards

These cards came out in March 2011, but I didn't get a box of them until right before Christmas. And now, close to the end of January, I've finally sorted them out. I'm kinda slow. lol

Here's the description from the Rittenhouse Archives website --

MARVEL: DANGEROUS DIVAS TRADING CARDS are coming in March 2011, with at least one color sketch card in every box. This all-new series, limited to 8,000 sequentially-numbered boxes, will feature some of the sexiest and most dominant women in the Marvel Universe!

More than 100 artists will bring their talents to Marvel: Dangerous Divas sketch cards.

Rounding out the chase cards are several exciting sets including:

• 72-Card parallel set (1:3 packs)
• 12 Women of Marvel (1:8 packs)
• 9 Sultry Seductresses (1:12 packs)
• 9 Embrace (1:24 packs)

They are nice looking cards and feature some great characters. My only problem with the set is that the backs of the cards are all puzzle-backs. I don't mind puzzle-backs, but I would have preferred one card of each character with biographical info on it.

It's an OK sketch, but she looks kind of cross-eyed. And the bottom of the card is damaged. It looks like the artist might have taped it down and damaged it when he removed the tape.

I guess I should post about my Christmas before the New Year arrives. :)

Our tree.

I had a wonderful Christmas morning with my wife Ginny, son Kenny and his girlfriend Jordyn. After the kids sorted out all of the gifts, we tore into them. I got the usual stuff like clothes, socks, underwear, scrapbooking supplies, etc. But, my wife really outdid herself this year.

One day in December she snuck out to a vintage toy store called The Toys Time Forgot. She bought me a bunch of great geeky stuff. And the amazing thing is, I didn't have any of this stuff yet.

I would also like to thank Michael Jones from the blog My Two Yen Worth. He sent me a bunch of Japanese Godzilla trading cards that I gave to my brother for Christmas. Thanks Michael!

Cheetah The Chimp, R.I.P.

A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s has died at age 80.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune (http://bit.ly/rRuTeJ ) that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She says he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films, which starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb says Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest says that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Sorry I haven't been around much this holiday season. It's been really hectic around here and my computer sucks. But, things are looking up for the new year. It looks like I will be getting a new computer! So, hopefully I will feel like blogging more soon. In the meantime, here are some pics of my Christmas ornaments. I took these photos in 2007 and not all of these made it to the tree this year. We change them up each year so that the tree is not too "geeky". Merry Christmas!

Harry Morgan, R.I.P.

I loved M*A*S*H when I was growing up. Rest in peace Col. Potter.

Harry Morgan, best known to television audiences as M*A*S*H's Col. Sherman Potter, was never what you'd call a star. Yet he was almost never out of work — which is as good a sign of his talent and our enduring affection as any.

Morgan, who died Wednesday at 96 in his L.A. home, had a career in TV and film that stretched from 1942 (To the Shores of Tripoli) to 1999 (the sitcom Love & Money). In all that time, there was never anything you'd really call a "Harry Morgan film" or a "Harry Morgan show" — though his breakthrough co-starring role in the popular early '60s December Bride spinoff Pete and Gladys came very close.

But it didn't matter. You knew what you would most often get from a Morgan TV appearance: a wry, honest, sometimes cranky everyman. And you were almost always happy to get it.

His early movie roles — there were more than 100 in all — were more varied, playing good guys and bad guys, and sidekicks to everyone from James Stewart to Henry Fonda (in 1943's The Ox-Bow Incident, one of Morgan's best film roles).

But the TV die was cast with Pete, the loving but put-upon husband often exasperated by his scatter-brained wife, Gladys — a character who was much-discussed by Pete but never seen in the original show, December Bride.

That was the Morgan we would come to know and love on the small screen, dryly funny and a bit sarcastic on the outside, but warm and mushy on the inside. You got more dry than warmth in his second big TV role, as Jack Webb's equally staccato partner in the late-'60s revival of Dragnet.

But the whole package shone again in not only his best-known, but probably also his best, TV role. Stepping into M*A*S*H in 1974 for the departed McLean Stevenson, Morgan as Potter created one of TV's most-loved authority figures, a man firmly in charge who held sway by being the smartest (and sometimes only) adult in the room. It would win him an Emmy and a permanent place in TV lore, and it no doubt helped save the show and extend its 11-season run.

Was Harry Morgan a big star? No. But sometimes our fondest memories are reserved for actors who burn a bit less brightly and a bit off from the center — and sometimes, those are the lights that last.

Back in 2008 I made a post about Archie The Snowman. Archie was a 20 foot snowman that greeted children at Chapel Hill Mall every Christmas for 35 years. When new management took over the mall in 2004 they got rid of him. Sadly, it looks like Archie has been destroyed.

Marvel Universe 2011 Trading Cards

Marvel Universe 2011 from Rittenhouse Archives

90-card base set covering some of Marvel's most memorable and ground breaking cross-over events including: The Korvac Saga, Secret Wars I, Fall of the Mutants, Age of Apocalypse, Heroes Reborn, Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, Shadowland, and Fear Itself.

Chase cards include: Ultimate Heroes, Artist Drafts, Marvel Originals, and base parallel.

I got a box of these today and I really like them. Each cross-over event is featured on nine cards so that when you put them in plastic pages they form a puzzle of the event and the story is detailed on the back of the cards. The only thing I don't like about them is the parallel cards. They are "clear" cards, which is neat, but they are unnumbered. The hand-drawn SketchaFEX Sketch Card I got in my box is Archangel by Renato Mapa Jr. and it is listed as extremely limited.

"The Family Circus" creator Bil Keane, whose kid-friendly comic strip gave readers a funny version of his own life at home and became one of the most widely syndicated cartoon panels in the world, has died at age 89, his distributor said on Wednesday.

Keane died on Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his home in Paradise Valley, Arizona, said Claudia Smith, a spokeswoman for syndication company King Features.

"The Family Circus" first appeared in 1960, and Keane modeled its two parents and four boisterous kids on himself, his wife and children. The comic still appears in 1,500 newspapers although Keane's son, Jeff, has helped with it.

"If 'The Family Circus' has any social value, it shows parents that their children are normal," the late Keane said in a statement provided by King Features.

"And if there is a philosophy behind the feature, it's this: A home filled with love and laughter is the happiest place in the world," he said.

"The Family Circus" is characterized by traditional family values and a round border that Keane used on his panels, to emphasize the closeness between the characters.

The strip features the characters Daddy, Mommy and their children Billy, Dolly, Jeffy and P.J.

King Features said the comic is among the most widely syndicated panels in the world and appears in about 1,500 newspapers.

The comic's humor typically comes from the children's guileless attitude, or their misunderstanding of what is occurring around them.

In one typical panel from the 1970s, the oldest boy holds out a hand in a snow storm and complains "I CAUGHT one of those snowflakes but I can't find it!"

Keane, a native of Philadelphia, taught himself to draw in high school. He first imitated the drawing styles of some of The New Yorker magazine cartoonists of the late 1930s, before developing his own approach.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War Two and met the woman who would become his wife, Thel Carne, while stationed in Australia.

Aside from appearing as a character in his strip, Thel also helped her husband as an editor and consultant.

After World War Two, Keane worked at the Philadelphia Bulletin as a staff artist, and moved his family to Arizona the year before launching his most famous comic strip.

Keane won the cartoonist of the year award in 1982 from the National Cartoonists Society.

He is survived by his children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His wife, Thel, died in 2008.

"We are fortunate that his son, Jeff, who has worked with him for years, will remain at the helm of the great feature and continue his father's tradition of putting a smile on readers' faces every day," Brendan Burford, comics editor for King Features Syndicate, said in a statement.

I went outside around 8:00 to put the trash can on the curb. And then I noticed that I have been vandalized. Someone busted up my tombstones and pulled my monsters out of the ground. Nothing is missing and they didn't touch the cemetery gateway. It was probably some punk kids. It looks like they may have run up to my decorations and kicked them. I'm not out a lot of money. I bought those tombstones at a garage sale for 25¢ each. It just makes me mad that some people have no respect for someone else's property.

Tricking and Treating

We had trick-or-treat here in Akron last night from 5 to 7 PM. The temperature was in the 40s, but at least it didn't rain or snow. My son's girlfriend Jordyn sat in the cold with me to hand out candy, a now yearly tradition that we started just last year, and my wife made us hot chocolate later in the night.

This year I made treat bags for the little beggars. Each bag had a fun-size candy bar, a gummy skeleton or teeth, a rubber fly and a couple more small pieces of candy. I made 40 of them because we only had 32 trick-or-treaters last year. Of course this year there were around 60. So, the last 20 only got a couple of pieces of candy without the bag.

A lot of the kids didn't put a whole lot of effort into their costumes. Either they didn't have a costume at all or they just had some fake blood on their face. One kid had his costume still in the package hooked onto his back pocket. There were a few Spider-Man's, a couple of Mario's, an Autobot and a banana. The best costume I saw was a young girl dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. All in all, it was still a fun night.

Mad Monster Memories

Here's a story of the Mego Mad Monsters from my brother Scott --

"When my brother and I were kids we had most of the action figures Mego produced. We had almost all of the Super-Heroes, Planet of the Apes, Wizard of Oz, Star Trek and of course the Mad Monsters. We only had three of the four. For some reason we never got Dracula. Come to think of it, I didn't have Dracula in a lot of the sets of monster action figures I bought over the years. The first figure I ever got was the Horrible Mummy. I think I was only around 6 or 7 when I bought him at the local Best store at a reduced price. His box had been ripped open, so I got him for a good price. I remember opening him on the ride back home. I stared at that pale face and glow in the dark eyes for a bit then put him back in his box. When I got home I buried him deep in my action figure box. Turns out I really did find him horrible. I was very scared of this figure. It was quite some weeks later before I opened him up again and got over my fear. Soon I got the Monster Frankenstein and the Human Wolfman. They became some of my favorite toys. Now I have the complete set. None of them are my original figures, except the Wolfman left arm on Frankenstein. But they're still some of my favorite toys!"

I know I've shared some of these photos before, but I don't think I've shared them all in one post. This is me dressed as Uncle Fester in 2004. I wore this costume twice that year. The first was at work and then a couple of days later I wore it to go trick or treating with the kids. This was the only time I shaved head.

A guy I worked with wanted some pictures with a light bulb in my mouth. He got a light bulb from work and gave it to me. He didn't tell me that he just took it out of a socket and that it was still hot. OUCH!

Man was I huge back then. I'm still a big guy, but I've since lost over 50 pounds.

I live in Saint Helena CA, but grew up just down the Hwy in Napa through the Eighties.

1977 Gene Simmons

Halloween has always been a great time and it's hard to pick just one favorite. The Gene year was fun because I wore it to the Cub Scouts party and all my fellow Wolfpack were impressed and suddenly shorter than I. Unfortunately that year while trick n treating, some coward of a punk stole my candy bag on the street and I went home crying. Real tough guy stealing from a skinny kid in high heels who can't run! My sister begrudgingly split her haul with me.

1976 Girl Scout

Also at a Cub Scouts party I wore my sisters Girl Scout Uniform and once again killed with my fellow scouts. Totally my idea.

I started [at the post office] in October of 1988 and was able to dress up within two weeks of being hired. My Post Office is quite small and the Supervisors over the years have been very encouraging in indulging my dress up tendencies.

I also dress up for Christmas as a Dickensian character ala: Bob Cratchitt. On Valentines day one year, I wore a red vest, white tutu and red frilly bloomers. Once.

The people in SH look forward to my costumes and are very disappointed if I don't dress up. I have usually had long hair and once dressed up as a mail lady and since SH is touristy, not everyone could tell I was in costume and I fooled many store owners also. Over the years the costumes have become more practical since I have to be on my feet all day. The ACE costume was the true test.

Halloween night of course, I decorate the house and often will show movies on a screen outside my house. 16mm movies projected, not this newfangled DVD projector stuff. (Though, I admit I'd have more range if I did use DVDs.)

My father died at 7:30 on Halloween night in 1992 and we always raise a glass in his honor. I will never be sad remembering his death date, because Halloween is my favorite day of the year.

As you can see, I do delight in the DIY ethic and will keep it up as long as I can.

ARRGH! was a humor/horror comic published by Marvel in 1974 and 1975. It lasted a total of 5 issues. This is the cover and first story from issue #2. It appears that each issue had some original content, like this story, and some reprint material. Reprinted material was from Crazy published by Atlas comics in the 1950's. The only exception seems to be issue #5 which appears to be all new material.

Tom Wilson Sr., the creator of the hard-luck comic strip character Ziggy, has died, his family said Monday. He was 80.

Tom Wilson Jr., who took over the comic in 1987, said his father died Friday of pneumonia at a Cincinnati hospital. The elder Wilson had moved from Cleveland to a Cincinnati nursing home about eight years ago to be near his family, his son said.

Wilson was an artist at American Greetings card company in Cleveland for more than 35 years and first published Ziggy in a 1969 cartoon collection, "When You're Not Around."

Ziggy was launched in 15 newspapers in 1971 and now appears in more than 500 daily and Sunday newspapers. It also has appeared in books, calendars and greeting cards.

Tom Wilson Jr. said the name Ziggy derived from his father's school experience of being the last alphabetically. When a new classmate arrived with a last name beginning with "Z," the idea took root with the friendly sounding "y'' ending, such as Billy or Tommy.

"Ziggy is a last-in-line character," the son said in a phone interview. "The last picked for everything and kind of a lovable kind of loser character."

"I had a 'y' at the end and 'z' at the beginning, so the word Ziggy just fell into place. That became his name," was the way Tom Wilson Sr. described it, according to his son.

Tom Wilson Jr. said his father was always optimistic.

"He was a passionate and charismatic man, it came out in everything he did," he said. "He loved ideas and he loved creating — that was really what drove him. He wasn't a loser in that sense because his passion just came out and inspired everyone around him."

Wilson was "a visionary cartoonist," said John McMeel, chairman and president of Andrews McMeel Universal, which owns Universal Uclick, formerly known as Universal Press Syndicate.

"Tom leaves behind a wonderful legacy in Ziggy, a hard-luck comics page hero who serves as a reflection of Tom's endearing wit and optimism in the face of adversity," he said in a statement.

Ziggy also starred in the ABC Christmas special, "Ziggy's Gift," which won a 1983 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program and was re-released on DVD in 2005.

Universal Uclick, which syndicated the Ziggy column, said Wilson also was head of a creative team that developed the Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears character licensing.

"Tom Wilson had a unique gift for producing creations that stirred imaginations and touched people's lives," said Hugh Andrews, chief executive officer and president of Andrews McMeel Publishing.

Besides his son, Wilson is survived by his wife, Carol, and daughters Ava and Julie.

Funeral services will be private.

I posted this photo last year and I'm posting it again this year. I took this photo on August 14, 1990 when me and some friends visited New York. We only walked through the bottom floor of the Twin Towers, but I'm glad I took this picture.

I clearly remember where I was when the terrorists attacked. I was at a former job in the back of the store doing some shipping and receiving. I always listened to the radio while I worked. They were talking about a plane that just hit the Twin Towers and what a terrible accident it was. Then all of a sudden they yelled "another plane just hit the towers!" That's when we knew it wasn't an accident. I told my fellow co-workers what had happened and they brought out a small television to watch the news. We were all in shock. When the big bosses came in they closed the store and told us to go home. Nobody felt like working. My wife and I went home and sat in front of the TV all day. It was one of the saddest days in my life.

Cliff Robertson, who portrayed John F. Kennedy in P.T. 109 and later won an Academy Award for his role as a mentally disabled man in Charly, died Saturday of natural causes. He had turned 88 one day earlier.

The film, television, and theater veteran enjoyed a career that spanned more than five decades, making his big-screen debut in the 1955 romantic drama Picnic opposite William Holden and Kim Novak. He would appear in dozens of films, including The Girl Most Likely, Gidget, Sunday in New York, The Naked and The Dead, The Devil’s Brigade, Three Days of the Condor, and more recently, the Spider-Man movies as Uncle Ben Parker.

A popular leading man in the ’60s, he played a sitting President — John F. Kennedy — in the 1963 World War II drama P.T. 109, after Kennedy gave his casting approval. Five years later, he scored an Oscar for his touching portrayal of mentally challenged bakery employee Charlie Gordon in Charly, which was based on the novel Flowers for Algernon. Robertson — who won an Emmy in 1966 for his performance in an episode of Bob Hope Presents The Chrysler Theatre – also popped up in such TV series as The Twilight Zone, Batman, and Falcon Crest, and in commercials for AT&T. He also earned attention for blowing the whistle on a film studio president who had victimized him in a check forgery scheme in 1977.

I saw Alice Cooper on August 9 at the Akron Civic Theatre. I have to say, that man puts on a hell of a show. For a guy in his 60s, he can still jump around and his voice sounds great. He sang a lot of his classics plus threw in some 80s and 90s songs. He also did a song form his soon to be released album Welcome 2 My Nightmare. The only real surprise was that he didn't sing Welcome To My Nightmare.

The singer, who had a history of alcohol-related arrests, was 47.

Jani Lane, the former lead singer of the rock group Warrant, was found dead in a Los Angeles-area hotel Thursday night, TMZ reported.

His body was found at the Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills, but no cause of death has been released.

The singer had a history of alcohol-related arrests. He was taken into custody in June 2009 for reporting crashing into a parked car. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor DUI and was put on probation for three years.

A year later, he was arrested for a similar incident that landed him in jail for 120 days.

Lane (born John Kennedy Oswald) also served as the lyricist and main songwriter for Warrant. He joined the band in 1986, two years after its formation by guitarist Erik Turner.

The band is probably best known for their single “Cherry Pie,” which Lane wrote. The song, a top 10 hit in 1990, featured a guitar solo by C.C. Deville of Poison, Jani’s longtime friend and bandmate of Bret Michaels, who tweeted his condolences to Lane's family after the news broke.

Lane also wrote several other hits for the group, including “Heaven,” “Down Boys” and “Sometimes She Cries” from their debut album, Dirty Rotten Filty Stinking Rich, and “I Saw Red” and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” from the group’s second album, Cherry Pie.

He left Warrant three times over the years, including the most recent, in 2008.

He was featured on VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club 2 in 2005 and last year toured with Great White, filling in for singer Jack Russell, who was recovering from surgery.

Step Out: Walk To Stop Diabetes 2011

It's that time of year again where I participate in the Step Out: Walk To Stop Diabetes fundraiser. I've been doing this walk almost every year for over 15 years.

Diabetes runs in my family. I currently control my diabetes with medication. But my brother still has it and our parents were both diabetic. I know firsthand what a diabetic has to go through and I don't like it.

My goal is to reach $200 in donations by October 2. Hopefully I can reach my goal with your help. No donation is too small or too large. Every little bit helps.

Bubba Smith, the former NFL star who made a successful jump to acting with a series of memorable Miller Lite ads and a key role in the hilarious Police Academy movies, has died. He was 66.

Authorities believe Smith succumbed to natural causes Wednesday at his Los Angeles-area home.

Ed Winter, assistant chief investigator for the L.A. County Coroner's Office, tells E! News that an investigator is en route to the former footballer's Baldwin Hills residence so the exact cause of death won't be know for a while.

Born Charles Aaron Smith, the 6-foot-7 football star plied his trade at Michigan State (where he was cheered on to the chants of "Kill, Bubba, Kill") before become a Pro Bowler in the NFL. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Baltimore Colts in 1970, followed by stints with the Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers. After retiring in 1976, he decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and began appearing in small roles in such shows as Good Times, Charlie's Angels and Taxi.

His popularity took off after popping up in a series of Miller Lite commercials with fellow former NFL greats Dick Butkus and John Madden in the early '80s. (He and Butkus would later reteam for the 1984 TV spinoff of the film Blue Thunder, which also costarred Dana Carvey.)

Smith's greatest mark on the big screen came playing Moses Hightower, the gentle giant of a cadet, who along with Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall and the rest of the bumbling recruits busted baddies in 1984's classic comedy, Police Academy. The film was such a hit, he reprised the part in five more sequels and a short-lived TV series.

More recent credits include Married...With Children, Family Matters, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and last year's indie horror flick Blood River.

The Saga of the Captain America Movie Poster

My wife and I went to see Captain America: The First Avenger on Sunday. Here's my review -- Awesome! Go see it!

We went to our local cheap theater where all seats are five bucks for any showing. We also bought a large popcorn, a large drink and a small drink for less than $10. You can't beat the price. So, I ask the guy at the concussion stand what they do with the movie posters. He says they sell them for $5. Five bucks? Can I get one? He says they should have a couple of extras and nobody else has asked for one yet. I leave him my name and number. I get a call on Monday that they have my poster. My wife drives me over to the theater and I give the guy five bucks. I am now the proud owner of a ginormous Captain America poster. Now to find some place to hang it.
